BALANCE AND MOTION

Tips from Teachers

The following Tips from Teachers were generated by Toledo Public and Springfield Local teachers during the TAPESTRIES Summer Institutes.

If you have any of your own Tips, please send them to us and we will post them on the TAPESTRIES Bulletin Board.

 Kit Needs and Concerns

  • Find trade books to extend this concept.
  • Teacher must do the activities before they do the activity with their students
  • Cardboard cutouts should be laminated to last longer, be sturdier
  • Suggest straightening of wire by rubbing on edge of table before next teacher uses the kit
  • Straws tend to split on the bottom have additional straws handy
  • Need additional zip lock plastic bags to store things in
  • Have stronger string for zoomers to prevent injury
  • Tape doesn't stick because of the waxy surface of the cups (scotch taps) therefore you need unwaxed cups

Lesson 1

  • We need more games (balance & motion).
  • We need materials so students can carry their activity home to share.
  • We had difficulty using the clothes pins and finding the balancing point.
  • Rules of safety.
  • Cg, where is it?
  • Dishpans are needed for organization.

Lesson 2

  • Need paper and scissors.
  • Video in the drawer.
  • Gyrosphere for extension project.
  • Ask students to bring in cereal cartons

Lesson 3

  • Where are the ramps?

Kit Modifications

Lessons 1 2 3

Lesson 1: Balance

  • I would integrate this with reading: "Mirette on the High Wire" is one book that can be used to extend this activity
  • Put the straw in on the ridged side
  • Put the tip of the straw in paint and observe the design that it is making on the paper
  • Read "The Balancing Girl" about the girl who loves to balance things
  • Do a web/word web with Balance in the middle
  • Use a balance beam in the room, teeter-totter on the playground
  • Use the "Stable Positions" worksheet have students write the answers then experiment to discover the correct answers. Cut up and pot on index cards so as to focus attention on one position at a time
  • Trip to COSI ride on the bike
  • Mobile pre-assemble paper clips and rubber bands for my special ed. students (poor eye-hand coordination) and have students model after you step-by-step OR use a regular education peer partner
Experiment with different shapes and sizes of cardboard (pre-punch holes in cardboard to hang or attach to paper clips)
  • Balancing pencil tape wrapped wire on pencil with ends hanging down for students to experiment.
  • Demonstrate/model for students when or if they are unable to experiment on their own.
  • Act. 2 Spinners paper clips need to be made into S pattern before the activity. Precut the spinning design due to poor cutting skills of my special ed. students
  • Have students share their favorite balance point using the crayfish.
  • Take home materials instead of leaving them for the next class.
  • Reinforce concepts (vocabulary).
  • Twister game.
  • Bike at Cosi
  • Tubes, one with weight hidden inside to show the difference between center of gravity and the geometric center.
  • Color code sides and "Stable positions" with sheet so kids can hold shapes the correct ways.
  • Laminate balancing pieces.
  • Make a whole class mobile.
  • Act. 3- straighten out the wire by using the edge of the table.

Lesson 2: Spinners

  • Zoomers pre-assemble for students.
  • Zoomer-wind at a slower pace and bring out slowly
  • For storage, pull strings together and wrap around the notches of the disc.
  • Safety Tip: Keep away from long hair.
  • Use a thicker string to prevent cutting off of circulation, breaking string and flying discs
  • Twirler Wings Have twirlers precut as well as straw.
  • Do activity together as a class-modeling step-by-step instruction by the teacher
  • Trace students on paper, cut out body and let student find the center of gravity.
  • Place right hand, right leg and cheek against the wall---- pick up your left leg.
  • Sit down, heels on the floor, cross your arms and stand up.
  • Take a cup of water and spin in a circular motion.
  • Teach students to spin top with two hands and not two fingers
  • Glue 8 pennies on 4in. disk to make it more stable.
  • Use a circle chart.
  • Use dishpans to organize supplies.
  • Paper punch cards.
  • Prepare bags ahead of time.
  • Bring in spinner toys
  • Act. 2-Drop whirly birds from window.

Lesson 3: Rollers

  • You can show the kids by helping them from behind
  • Include other rolling objects
  • Get longer ramps or make ramps rougher, smoother, longer, shorter, higher-compare and contrast
  • Data racers/matchbox ramps
  • Part 2-dip ends of cup in paint (add drop of soap) and roll down the ramp
  • Measure the arcs/lines made by the cup
  • Use just one set of clothes pins on ramp to make it easier to "Park the car" and "Fall on our Face"
  • Have kids put ramps back to bask so they could experiment with the items rolling back and forth
  • Use a bigger and longer ramp so items will roll farther allowing special ed. students more time to actually observe the motion
  • Remove the tape carefully so not to destroy the ends of the track (teacher instead of student)
  • Divide the class in half allow each team to build a roller coaster on the walls outside their classroom. The marble has to successfully go from one end to the other.
  • Have a race to see what roller coaster allows the marble to go the faster.
  • Show video on roller coasters.
  • Check to see if straws fit in and put them on the circle side.
  • Use marble worksheet.
  • Could use washers instead of pennies.
  • Catch marble in cup at end of ramp.
  • Use a hot wheel track to test cars
  • Act.2- Use different cups because the tape doesn't stick to wax.
  • Act. 3- Allow enough time for trial and error
